If you head just north of the historic French Quarter, you will find this spectacular example of late Victorian architecture at its best. Our Lady of Gaudalupe Catholic Church was founded in 1826, making her the oldest church in New Orleans. She contains many antiques that date back to the year of her birth in the 1800s. Tours are conducted by appointment. Admission is free.

St. Alphonsus Church was built by the Irish Catholic community of New Orleans in 1855. New Orleans had many Catholic communities namely French, Irish and German. St. Alphonsus has Italian architecture with beautiful stained glass windows. After the merger of the Catholic parish, St. Alphonsus stopped conducting masses which are now held only at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church. St. Alphonsus is a cultural center with museum about immigrants. It has also been featured in one Anne Rice's novels: The Witching Hour.

Illustrious in the extreme, the Cathedral has often single-handedly solidified New Orleans' identity. Lording over the historic landscape of Jackson Square, this magnificent cathedral is a soulful amalgamation of culture, history and an inextricable French legacy. The Cathedral of St. Louis was first built in 1718 but became an established parish in 1720. The current cathedral is not the original, but a rebuilt expansion of the third version of the cathedral, built-in 1789. In 1964, Pope John Paul II designated the cathedral as a Minor Basilica. The graceful beauty of the St. Louis Cathedral and its surrounding courtyards in the French Quarter makes it a sight to behold. Cradled on the banks of the Mississippi River, the cathedral is considered one of the greatest symbols of Catholicism on the North American continent. Upheld by beautiful blue steeples and interiors which are just as ornate, this cathedral is an edifice hewn with an indelible French heritage.

St. Mary's Church was built by the German Catholics in 1860 in the grand Baroque-style architecture. It contains a shrine dedicated to Father Francis Xavier Seelos who was beatified in 2000. Also present here is the to-be saint's coffin, relics and personal belongings. St. Mary's is also the parish church and holds services and masses. The church however sustained extensive damage due to Hurricane Katrina and need close to USD1 million for restoration.

Located across the Mississippi River from the bustling downtown area of the city, Algiers Point, fondly known as just 'The Point', is the city's rather forgotten neighborhood. Called the 'Brooklyn of New Orleans' on account of the stunning views of the city skyline that one can enjoy from the levee that lines the waterfront here, this charming area was once a busy town, being home to several businesses, and was also an entertainment hot spot, being home to several halls and venues.
