The Lab is a center of alternative culture for the Costa Mesa area and views itself as an anti-mall by offering a unique indoor and outdoor space for funky local businesses. In addition to the many trendy shops like Urban Outfitters and Popkiller, you can find great vintage clothing at Buffalo Exchange, or check out the artwork at the ARTery. If the hipster-style stories leave you hungry, there are several cafes and restaurants open late. The Lab also hosts events, showcasing local artists, musicians and performers.
One area in Anaheim where you can find a different type of entertainment other than Disney is the Anaheim Garden Walk. Located right behind Disneyland across Harbor Boulevard, the complex provides dining and shopping. Most of the restaurants are well-known ones, like Roy's, Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Entertainment includes a Bowlmor Lanes bowling alley and the interesting U.F.O. Experience exhibition. Located in the downtown Long Beach Harbor, Shoreline Village shopping center features some great shops and restaurants. From here you can also take boat tours of the Long Beach and Los Angeles harbors. Restaurants include The Yard House, Tequila Jack's, Tugboat Pete's and Parkers' Lighthouse. At sunset, an excursion along the Long Beach Harbor Marina is perfect and at night, both The Yard House and Tequila Jack's are hopping bars that serve several beers and tequilas.
Of course, Surf City Huntington Beach's mall is outdoors. Shoppers love exploring the boutiques, restaurants and movie theater in a lovely setting. Bella Terra means "beautiful land" in Italian, and this Tuscan village-inspired mall certainly is beautiful. Balboa Candy has two locations in Newport Beach and between both of them, you will find probably the largest selection of salt-water taffy in California. Yet, that isn't all this store sells, here you will find classic, retro treats, novelty candy, licorice and the vendors also sell many products in bulk-size. So come in and buy some Bubble Gum Cigarettes, Pop Rocks and Fun-Dip, then get ready to be transported back to your childhood.
Nordstrom in Newport Beach's Fashion Island is a monolithic department store, upscale goods and well-heeled shoppers entwining throughout three floors.
