Palm Cottage Gardens was the home of legendary horticulturist, Dr. Henry Nehrling who acquired the estate to build a garden where he could research subtropical and tropical plants all through the year. It was the first of the experimental botanical gardens in Florida and was a much visited garden in the 1900s with the likes of Thomas Edison and Theodore Roosevelt visiting it. Today only six acres (2.43 hectares) of the original 60 acres (24.28 hectares) remain which includes the house and gardens. It is now owned and maintained by the Henry Nehrling Society.
