Anton Neumayr Platz is the hub of Salzburg's nightlife, a melting pot of bars, restaurants, clubs and cafés. The Humboldtstubn is a nice restaurant with a bar at the foyer. In the summer guests can sit out on the terrace and watch the world go by, inside there are rustic wooden tables. The menu offers Austrian and international dishes. A great little place.
Austrian meals, prepared following old, traditional recipes, are extremely hard to find in Salzburg these days. Often restaurants advertising with these kinds of slogans turn out to be real tourist traps. But in the "Zum Fidelen Affen," (which translates to "At the Jolly Monkey"), this is not the case. Over the years, the restaurant on a side street of the Linzergasse has become highly acclaimed among Salzburg inhabitants. Everything that is Austrian, you can find on the menu, from good old roast pork to the well-known Wiener Schnitzel, best enjoyed with a cool pint of beer. And all this is served quickly and is of very good quality. As Austrians would say, "Mahlzeit!" ("Enjoy your meal!")
Urbankeller is a popular gathering spot among locals and tourists alike. Occupying an over 600 year old wine cellar, this traditional Austrian tavern features a menu and ambiance to match. Their signature Wiener Schnitzel is a bestseller, best enjoyed with their wine and craft beer selection. They also cater to vegan and vegetarian patrons with several dishes on offer. Save room for their sweet and fruity lasagne dessert served with strudel. The stage out back plays host to live gigs by local bands including jazz, rock and myriad genres.
The Shamrock is an elegant fusion of traditional Irish features and more modern European elements. The bar is a popular meeting place for young and old, and live bands also appear regularly, with an in-house DJ filling any gaps in the line-up. The back part of the pub contains several tables, where customers can sit and have a chat in more sedate surroundings. Besides the usual selection of (Irish & Austrian) drinks, the Shamrock serves up a fine selection of pizza and sandwiches. The place is usually crowded on weekends, special nights and during game nights when locals cheer their favorite team and chat over the finer points of the game over chilled beers.
Together with the Müllner Bräustübl and the StieglKeller, this is one of the most popular beer gardens in town, especially for those with a penchant for Weissbier (white beer). In the summer months plenty of people drop by for an after-work drink and a bite to eat (goulash with noodles is especially popular). Groups should book in advance, and can even visit the historic "Small Brewery" by appointment.
The Pasta & Vino restaurant and shop offer delicious homemade Italian pasta which you can eat in or take away. When you enter the shop you feel as if you are in Northern Italy. There is a large counter and shelves, stacked with Italian Wines. There are various types of fresh pasta to choose from daily, such as ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach or boletus edulis (mushrooms). At lunch time, you can buy a hot meal but it's hard to find a free seat because the shop does tend to get crowded. Please call for open hours.
