Menger Hotel

This historic hotel is located on Alamo Plaza, literally next door to the famed Alamo. Built in 1859, it's one of the oldest buildings in the city and is the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi River. Two American presidents became enamored with the hotel - Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders enjoyed hanging out at the Menger Bar, and President Bill Clinton developed a penchant for the hotel's proprietary mango ice cream during his visits to the city. As with most of the city's oldest buildings, this hotel is reportedly haunted by as many as 32 different friendly specters.

Fairmount Hotel

One of the city's finest hotels, the Fairmount specializes in service. Moving from its original location in 1985 proved to be a monumental event. This historic hotel was loaded on 30 rubber-tired dollies and slowly lugged down the street to its new home. Its award-winning restaurant, elegant lobby and well-appointed guest rooms make it a favorite among tourists and locals looking for a luxurious escape. Guest rooms feature in-room coffee makers, terrycloth robes and hairdryers. In 2004, The Lancaster Group in Houston took over the management of the Fairmount and began extensive renovations on the hotel to return it to the status of "San Antonio's little jewel." This fabulous facility has been named as one of Conde Nast's Top 50 American Hotels and is a four-star, four-diamond property.

Arbor House Inn & Suites

The Arbor House Inn and Suites consists of four historic houses clustered around a very well manicured garden. The homes date back to 1903. Renovations to the property have garnered the San Antonio Conservation Society Plaque for excellence in historic renovations. The houses contain three suites apiece, all of which have high ceilings, pine floors, private baths and balconies. Romance, elegance, and a convenient location make this bed and breakfast a good choice for anyone looking to stay near downtown without having to stay in a corporate-run hotel.
