One of Europe's largest markets and a masterpiece of modernist architecture, Valencia's Mercado Central is a joyously lively, colorful and welcoming place to do your shopping. Visit in the morning and you'll see an astounding array of fresh produce attractively displayed in all the stalls. It opened in 1928 opposite La Lonja. It's a huge 8000 square meter expanse of steel and glass decorated with typically colorful Valencian ceramic tiles. Proud local architects Soler March and Guardia Vich even included the colors of the regional flag (Senyera) in its windows.
Mercado de Colón is a pleasant reminiscent of the past. Designed by Francesc Mora in the early 20th Century, this indoor market is an impressive construction. The imposing entrance, the iron and stone structure, and the glass on either sides add an interesting dimension to the place. In addition to admiring its architecture, there are a passel of local goods and souvenirs to rummage through. Mercado de Colón should definitely be a part of your itinerary. Call for the open hours.

París Valencia is a chain of bookshops with a total of five in Valencia. The stores vary a lot in terms of size. They can be large and modern or small and cosy. For example, the store on Navellos Street, a pedestrian area off the Plaza de la Virgen, is tiny and looks like a kiosk from outside. Inside, however, you'll find a wide variety of publications. Since the five shops share merchandise and stock lists, it is very easy to find whatever you are looking for, but that may mean walking to another of the shops. They also have a lot of books on special offer. You can get old magazines and the latest novels at very affordable prices.
This spacious and bright store has offered its clients the latest and best in men's fashion for eight years. You'll also find all of the latest accessories for people (fashion victims maybe?) who aren't afraid to spend a little bit more money on these sort of things. This store is generally geared towards a more mature clientele.

A visit to Valencia wouldn't be complete without stopping in at Lladró. This brand is known the world over for its beautiful porcelain figurines and ceramics. They have had so much success in fact, that there are now shops in London and the United States. Lladró porcelain is made in Tavernes Blanques, a town near Valencia, in what's called "The City of Porcelain", but here, this is its main shop, a luxurious establishment downtown where, apart from the figures that have made them famous, you'll find all sorts of great gift ideas such as ties, raw silk handkerchiefs and leather products. And if you want to be really original and surprise your friends, get them a leather bag with porcelain details. They will love it!
