Spanning across 3,44,000 square feet (31958.64 square meters), the Hampton Roads Convention Center is a state-of-the-art facility that has excellent event space, ideal for corporate programs. Dating back to the early 19th century, the Old Thomas James Store is one of the most-excellently preserved stores in the region. Designed in the antebellum style, the store boasts of an A-frame wood structure and although it was relocated several times over the years, the store manages to take visitors a step back into the past. Now managed by Mathews County Historical Society, the store doubles up as an interpretive center and is a great spot to visit for history buffs.
For a great musical experience, visit the Hampton Coliseum. This state-of-the-art coliseum equipped with versatile facilities can accommodate up to 13,800 roaring fans. A real masterpiece, it sprawls over 75 acres of land. It also provides business facilities with conference and meeting rooms. The convenient location in the heart of the city is a landmark in itself and attracts tourists from all over.
Westover was built in 1730 by the founder of Richmond, William Byrd. The view of the river and the beauty of the house and grounds make this one of the most enchanting spots in Virginia. The Elizabethan knot garden, a majestic gate topped with sculptures of metal and stone and sprawling lawns dotted with century-old tulip poplars are a delight to encounter. The intricately carved banister of the massive staircase is amazingly detailed. Charles City is about 1 1/2 hours from Richmond. Take I-64 east to Route 155 south to Route 5.
Air Power Park is an open air museum featuring vintage airplanes and space crafts. Spread over 15 acres (6.070 hectare), this park features air and space vehicles from the 1950s and 1960s. Apart from the museum, this park houses a playground for children. This is a must-visit place for the science enthusiasts.
