Top Rated Attractions in Jackson

LeFleurs Bluff State Park

This sprawling state park is located just outside of Jackson and incorporates over 305 acres (123 hectares) of untamed wilderness and pristine wetlands. Named after celebrated French-Canadian trader and founding father of the town of Jackson, Louis LeFleur, this is the site where the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed in 1830. In addition to the intricate network of hiking and nature trails, the interesting and educational Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is located nearby. Golf enthusiasts can also enjoy playing in a scenic and well-maintained environment at the park's golf-course.

Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum

To the casual visitor, this may seem like a peculiar attraction, but not when one considers the role that Mississippi's two most significant industries have played in the history and economy of the state. The Agriculture and Forestry Museum features over 40,000 square feet (3716.12 square meters) of exhibition space, displaying artifacts, machinery and documents that pay tribute to farmers and lumbermen throughout Mississippi's history. The museum gift shop serves a limited menu of refreshments and offers a variety of unique and educational souvenirs.

Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium

This traditional horseshoe shaped stadium (a.k.a. A.C. Butch Lambert Field) is the home of the Jackson State University Tigers football team and the famous Jaycettes. Besides the standard Saturday football mayhem, the 60,492-seat facility hosts the high school state football championships. It is also the place where big name national touring acts play in the summertime.

Jackson Mynelle Gardens

These grounds, created by Mynelle Westbrook Hayward as the ultimate home garden, were acquired by the city of Jackson in 1973. The seven acres of quiet countryside feature several distinct gardens, with pathways, pools and reflecting ponds. The estate has been used for garden parties, civic functions and as a retreat for World War II veterans. The facility is now used for a variety of functions including wedding receptions and corporate meetings. A gift shop features the work of Mississippi craftsmen.

Mississippi Petrified Forest

Just 17 miles northwest of Jackson, visitors find one of nature's most stunning peculiarities. Registered as a National Natural Landmark in 1966, the Petrified Forest features a 1.5-mile walking trail that takes visitors through this frozen woodland. Along the way, trail guides tell how this phenomenon came into existence. After viewing the trees, guests can stop by the museum to learn more, have a basket lunch in the picnic area or stroll through the gift shop.

Smith-Wills Stadium

Opened in 1975, this comfortable stadium is home to the Jackson Senators, the city's minor league baseball team, and also hosts various large-venue events throughout the year. The bleacher seats are so close to the action, you might think you are playing rather than watching. Special promotions are hosted throughout the season, such as Thirsty Thursdays, when all beverages cost USD1. Tickets for Generals games cost USD4 for general admission and go up from there based on seat location.
