Hall of Audience

by snikra

"Common Court"

Diwan-i-Aam or 'Hall of Public Audience' served as a common court and was used for holding meetings, celebrations and festivities in Amer Fort. The 48 pillars supporting the entire structure are an intricate blend of Hindu and Mughal decor that supposedly represents the ties between Maharaja Man Singh and King Akbar. These pillars form the inner and outer rows that are made of marble and sandstone respectively. This part of the Amer Fort also served as an accommodation facility for visiting royalties. However, somewhere in the mid 19th century, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II got the rear portion of this place converted into a billiard room. To the right of Diwan-i Aam one will find 27 Kaccheri; the administrative and secretariat office of the complex. As of now, like many areas of the fort, Diwan-i-Aam, is undergoing restoration work.
