A gong is a traditional percussion instrument made of bronze that can be easily played by the rhythmic hammering of its surface. Gongs are customarily used to commence an important event or ceremony. Gamelan music also uses a lot of gong sound effects. The only remaining gong foundry in West Java, Sukarna invites visitors to watch artisans handcraft gongs and other gamelan instruments using traditional methods: simple equipment, an open furnace and bellows. Opposite the factory, visitors can observe the hand-carving of wooden gong stands. A showroom smartly displays the handsome products. Admission is free.
