Friends Sushi & Bento Place is located in the 39th Street area, one of the most diverse locations in the city for authentic food. They are indeed authentic, with many noodle dishes and delicious sushi rolls made with all kinds of fish. The ambiance is quiet and cozy, but it is a good place to go with big groups, also. They are also one of the few Japanese restaurants that serve a bento box, a cute arrangement of dishes of your choice.
A colorful, hip establishment, Blue Koi is one of the best places for Asian fusion food in Kansas City. Especially good are their dumplings (pan fried or steamed), scallion biscuits with awesome sauce (a garlic-y dip that is indeed awesome), and a dish called Ants on a Stick (cellophane noodles tossed with your choice of meat or tofu). They also have many flavors of hot and bubble tea, along with a full bar. This is a great place to come with for a family event or a romantic date. A vibrate part of the 39th Street community, they have art openings every first Friday.
This casual, Westport restaurant gives diners a "hands on" dining experience. Most diners choose the extraordinary buffet where a guest can fill his or her plate with raw meats, vegetables, and an assortment of spices. One of the chefs will then throw the complete assembly onto a large round grill and prepare it. Add some fried calamari, steamed dumplings or an egg roll, and you have a meal. Diners can also order from a full menu.
Broadway Café, a central hub of Kansas City, is one of those places through which everyone passes eventually. They roast their own beans, so no other coffee taste as good as theirs. In fact, other coffee shops buy Broadway Café coffee to sell. Some of their best drinks include an iced mint mocha and the Depth Charge. Many of the baristas top off the drinks with impressive latté foam art. Some pastries and sandwiches from local restaurants are also available. This is a good place to come with a group of friends, or it can be a nice quiet place to read.
For incredible, authentic Middle Eastern food, Jerusalem Café is the place to go. Pictures and decorations from Jerusalem fill the walls, making you forget you are in Midwest America. Especially good is their shwarma chicken, gyros, and krass-stuffed pastries. For dessert, try a cup of Turkish coffee and baklava. Located in the heart of Westport, their giant windows and outside seating is a relaxing place to watch the city go by. They even have a hookah bar upstairs that overlooks the street. This place is relatively cheap and casual for the high-quality food, and is a great place to go with kids, a group, or on a date.
