House with Chimeras

Best

"Surrounded with Numerous Legends"

An austere-looking edifice draped in dull concrete stands at the corner of Bankova Street, topped with an assemblage of illusory and fantastical beings that watch from above – curious gargoyles cast in stone that somehow escaped the imagination of hunting enthusiast Władysław Horodecki, and climbed atop this Art Nouveau masterpiece. The House of Chimaeras was designed by Polish architect Horodecki in the wee years of the 19th Century, and the mythical features were sculpted with ideas from the former by artist Emilio Sala. As Horodecki was plagued by financial distress in the years that followed, the building escaped from under his aegis and ultimately became one of the residences of the President of Ukraine – which it remains to this day. Of the many whimsical creatures that adorn the top of the building, some of the most prominent ones include crocodile and rhinoceros busts, as well as catfish entangled in lotus flower stems. Horodecki's unusual interpretations were compared to that of Spanish Gaudí.
