St Mary's Well

by Kglavin

"Holy well from 1302"

Cures for a variety of ailments have been associated with this well since 1302. Long ago, it was a popular pilgrimage site with the faithful frequently traveling great distances. The well was particularly popular for baptisms. Originally part of an ancient religious complex where the St Mary's Church of Ireland now stands, Main Street now divides the two areas. Modern health and safety considerations have forced the Killarney Town Council to lock the well entrance, though visitors can still peer through the gate towards the water below. It still has a charming appeal with its well preserved, diminutive entrance. Call ahead for hours.
