St. Mura's High Cross

by Foto-Rabe

"Engraved cross slab of great historical merit"

The cross has been carved on an upright slab located in the centre of an old graveyard. This area was once the site of a monastery, which was founded by St Mura. On both sides of the cross are elaborate graphics of birds, and two figures can plainly be seen. (An inscription on the cross has never been properly translated.) This site has been linked to the great ring fort nearby at Grianan of Aileach; it dates back to the ancient O'Neill dynasty. St Mura was a relative of St Columba, the founder saint of Derry and of Iona.
