St. Michael Chapel is a beautiful religious structure situated in the very heart of Košice in Slovakia. Though it plays second fiddle to the imposing St. Elizabeth Cathedral, the chapel has its own archaic charm that allures visitors though its 14th-century portal. It is a Gothic structure that was initially built as a cemetery chapel, but later served as a place of worship for the Slovaks. Renovated to its former glory in 2006, the chapel is fitted with several historic gems such as the ancient gravestones, Coat of arms of Košice, and a criss-crossed roof which is quite impossible to miss. A vivid illustration of Saint Michael vanquishing the Devil that defines the facade of the place is its yet another artistic element that draws attention.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary also commonly known as Dominican Church, is the oldest preserved church in the town of Košice. Built in 1290 with a Romanesque nave, the structure was reconstructed after a big fire in 1556 using the Baroque style. It has the highest conical tower in Košice with a height of 68 meters (223 feet). Rich paintings adorn the walls of the religious structure with the ceiling showcasing a Štefan Voroš masterpiece. Numerous statues of Dominican saints namely Dominic de Guzman, Catherine of Siene and the daughter of King Bela IV, Dominican nun Margaret are present in the church.
Possibly the oldest church in Slovakia, the St. Elisabeth Cathedral delineates tales of Košice's history through its 700-year-old existence. An imposing Gothic marvel that towers over the heart of the city, it is hailed as one of Europe's easternmost cathedrals. Its 13th-century edifice was constructed in more than four stages and its awe-inspiring facade as well as the ornate interior thoroughly justify the painstaking efforts taken by its master builders back then. More than 36 meters (118 feet) wide, the church is accentuated with two towers, one of which scales close to 59 meters (193 feet) above Slovakia's eastern border. The structure is essentially baroque with few 11th-century nuances of Romanesque architecture highlighting its facade. The interior is replete with majestic vaults and stained-glass windows that illuminate the main altar in myriad ribbons of sunlight. A medieval masterpiece, the altar is complete with monuments that sit in the company of more than 40 Gothic paintings. Ornate frescoes and polychromed sculptures are other elements of the cathedral that further make the place an amalgam of culture and art. Further defined by ornamental portals, a sundial and the much-acclaimed spiraling staircase, the cathedral stands as a befitting commemoration of its patron saint, Saint Elisabeth.
