With an interesting and varied history behind it, the impressive Lahneck Castle is built on top of a high cliff and overlooks the Rhine River. Its massive structure imbibes medieval defense style of building and it was in fact initially constructed in 1244 as a defense for the Mainz estates in Lahnstein. After being damaged in the war, it stayed uninhabited till it was undertaken for restoration and maintenance. The interiors of the Castle represent excellent medieval furniture and art works and the spacious rooms, knight’s hall and the majestic staircase are all beautifully preserved till date. From the pentagonal keep, one can enjoy far reaching sights ranging from the Lahn delta and the nearby Stolzenfels Palace.
Escape into another world as you walk into this Märchenwald. The park named, Märchenwald, that roughly translates into fairytale forests, is rightly called so. Established in 1934, but falling into disuse for a couple of years, the fairytale forests were restored by Heinz Pinnen in 1987. Here, children of all ages can learn about Grimm fairy tales, through working models that can speak and move. If the voice of the models sounds familiar, that is because Konrad Beikircher himself has lent his voice for the models. Hansel and Gretel, Puss in Boots and Snow White are just some of tales you can get a glimpse of. There is also a fairytale trail in the forest that is designed especially for adults, so that they can not only understand and learn the stories for themselves, but also convey the proper meanings to their children. If you want to experience a one-of-a-kind storytelling, then head to Märchenwald for a memorable time.
