Gun and Shell Factory

Situated in Cossipore or Kashipur in the northern fringes of Kolkata, this establishment is also commonly referred to as Rifle Factory. The oldest surviving factory in the history of South East Asia, the Gun and Shell factory was first established by the East India Company in 1802 as ‘Gun Carriage Agency’ and was responsible for the manufacture and maintenance of gun carriages. The factory evolved with time and adapted to technological progress and modern techniques. Today, it uses state-of-the-art facilities to manufacture a number of advanced weapon systems for the Indian Army, Navy and other government sectors. Some of the important products include the 84mm. Rocket Launcher, Grenade 7.62 Rifle, 51mm. Mortar, 0.32” Pistol and a number of ammunition items. Permission from the State Government needs to be obtained before visiting this site.
