The town of Shantiniketan, the abode of famous poet and Nobel prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, has a huge complex called Uttarayan, that comprises different structures and buildings; Bichitra Bhavan being one of them. Also referred to as Rabindra Bhavan, it was established in 1961, to mark the birth centenary of Tagore. The Bhavan houses the Tagore museum, research institute and a library. The museum is dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore and showcases his belongings, art-work and memorabilia. Tagore Museum has many personal items like Tagore's ivory casket, shoes and musical instruments p; it also has the Nobel medal and the diploma certificate. This great poet has traveled extensively and this is evident from the display of travelogues, souvenirs, and gifts received from overseas leaders at the Tagore museum. Do browse through the excerpts of his letters (to great leaders like Gandhi), paintings and short stories. Before entering the museum, remove your footwear as the locals give it the status of a divine space.
