Wawel Dragon

The legend of the Wawel Dragon is a renowned story in Polish culture since centuries. The story goes that the deadly dragon living in a cave terrified the kingdom of King Krakus, by wreaking havoc upon locals and destroying the villages. According to some versions, the dragon was slain by King Krakus's sons, while in other versions, a shoemaker executed him and married the princess. The dragon's statue at the foot of the Wawel Hills, facing the supposed den of the mythical creature, is an interesting way to remember this legend. The 6 meters (20 feet) tall bronze statue stands on a boulder and is programmed to breathe fire out at regular intervals. A popular tourist attraction in the city, the monster statue is well liked by children and lovers of folk tales.

Pomnik Grunwaldzki (Grunwald Monument)

This monument was designed by Marian Konieczny and erected to mark the 500th anniversary of the victory over the Teutonic Knights. The equestrian figure of King Wladyslaw Jagiello is surrounded by figures of the Lithuanian Prince Witold, the defeated Grand Master and Polish and Lithuanian Knights. The monument was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II but it was returned to its place after reconstruction in 1976.

Badylak Memorial Plaque

In the north west corner of the Old Town Square stands a small, green water pump with a small plaque affixed to it. On this spot on March 21, 1980, Walentyn Badylak doused himself in gasoline and burned himself alive. The 76 year-old Badylak, a veteran of the Home Army underground resistance movement during World War II, burned himself in protest against the Communist regime and its refusal to recognize the Soviet murder of 15,000 Polish Army officers in Katyn in 1940. Stand here and remember one man's courage and sacrifice.

Tadeusz Kosciuszko Monument

One of the most renowned monuments in Poland is the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Monument. Located in the vicinity of the Wawel Castle, this equestrian monument of Kościuszko is a liberating example in the area as he is a celebrated Polish American war hero of independence. The statue was designed in the 19th Century by sculptor duo Leonard Marconi and his son in law, the renowned, Antoni Popiel. The monument also has a copy in Michigan and was a gift from the Krakow government to the Americans.

Bulwar Czerwienski

Bulwar Czerwienski is a lush patch of green skirting a bend in the Wisla river as it passes through the heart of the city. The grassy area is a welcome respite from the urban chaos of the city center, and you'll find everyone from joggers in the morning to tourists and locals taking a breather from their schedule. The little park offers beautiful sights of the river, and is occasionally a site for community and cultural events as well.

Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Kraków

Founded as an homage to the great astronomer and mathematician, Copernicus, the Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Krakow is a landmark in the city. Designed by famed sculptor Cyprian Godebski, the edifice was earlier located within the premises of the Jagiellonian University's Collegium Maius when it was founded in the 19th Century. However, it was later shifted to the Planty Park, in front of the Collegium Witkowski building in 1953. The reason for its development was to commemorate the fact that Copernicus studied at the Krakow Academy during his career.
