"Cherry blossom shrine"
Famous for its cherry blossoms, this old shrine dates from 784 when it was established by the Emperor Kammu. The place really comes alive in April when impromptu food and drink stalls are set up under the trees for eating, drinking and merrymaking, especially by the students of nearby Ritsumeikan University. The 10th of April sees the annual cherry blossom festival with performances of traditional koto and shamisen music.
