In its earliest days, Iron Range National Park was a hotbed of volcanic activity. The land we know today was born of these fiery and turbulent episodes, as well as the erosion that occurred in the following millennia. More than fifty sections and units of the Australian and American armies were based at Iron Range during World War II. Now sealed, the remote territory also supported a large airbase, built in 1942, intended to be used as a launchpad for American airforce. Today, the park is a tranquil slice of rainforest offset by glorious mountains. The spectacular white quartz sands of Chilli Beach on the Queensland Coast are no less than a paradise. Several walking and cycling trails, viewing platforms, picnic areas, and campsites await.
