Blues Cafe Bar

The Blues Cafe Bar is the place for live music in Harrogate, although don't be fooled by the name; the bands here play more than just the blues. It's a place to relax, have a drink and then rock out with some of the best regional names in live music. There's a resident act every Wednesday and guests each Tuesday, but the music's actually there every single night, meaning there's no excuse not to go out and party a little (Monday nights are jam nights, for aspiring musicians). Or, simply stop in for lunch or dinner. The blues bar is an Egyptian restaurant in the evenings. -Chris Nickson

The Library Pub

The Library may not provide you with any intellectual stimulation, but it does offer some very satisfying beer, live music, cheap food, as well as a friendly atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. You can even meet new people here, chat with the staff, or just sit back and enjoy a quiet drink on your own. The bar also has a small stage and seating area upstairs that poses as a venue for many artist performances that always manage to receive wild audience cheers. This place is also a popular student hang-out, and by the way things seem, it's definitely one library they love visiting.

O'Neill's

This is a branch of the chain of popular Irish theme pubs. Love them or loathe them, Irish theme pubs are commonplace, and although there is a prevalent tendency to clutter them with assorted and unnecessary bric-a-brac, the temptation has been just about resisted here. The wide, open bar area gives plenty of room to congregate, and the large benches and tables make this a great venue for group gatherings. Having downstairs restrooms is a little awkward, but the layout of the building makes it unavoidable. The menu attempts to showcase traditional food and, considering the large portions, it is reasonably priced.

Beaver Works

Quaintly located among the industrial parks, the Beaver Works plays host to some of the biggest acts in contemporary house and techno music. Formerly the Bed Factory, this place attracts young working professionals simply because of its great club and house music. The Beaver Works is also known to host some of the biggest parties around like the Detached Xmas party which brings in some of the best DJs from around Europe on one platform. The decor is minimal, with psychedelic lights, great sound systems, and screaming partygoers. A great place to spend your evening the Beaver Works will surely leave you wanting to come back for more.

Whitelock's Ale House

If you like your pubs on the traditional side, you'll love Whitelock's. Dating from the 1700s, this small and cozy pub is ideal for a quiet drink. The gleaming brass fixtures and fittings lend a quaint charm that is increasingly rare in city center pubs. This, and the tempting selection of hand-pumped ale—including John Smith, Ruddles and Theakston Old Peculiar— has helped to make Whitelock's a firm favorite with locals and tourists alike. If you're hungry, try the excellent food. The menu includes Whitelock's seafood pie and beefsteak pie.

Old Bell Tavern

The Old Bell Tavern has been in business since the 17th century, which offers you a glimpse into a historical site. The current bar opened in 1999, but it's not just as a pub, it's also with a highly-regarded brasserie upstairs. Now part of the Market Town Taverns chain, there's great attention to detail, not only in the love that's gone into the physical restoration, but also the way customers are made to feel. Up top is a small museum that celebrates Farrah's famous Harrogate toffee, whose shop used to be on the ground floor. - Chris Nickson
