In a Grade II listed building, the Snickleway Inn has been documented as an inn since at least 1769, with parts of the building going back to the late 15th Century. Its real claim to fame, however, is that it’s supposedly the most haunted pub in York. It is the home to several different ghosts and phenomena, including the ghost of a young girl, an angry old man in the clear, and the unaccountable smell of lavender on the top floor. That aside, the Snickleway Inn is a friendly place with good beer and good, if basic, food; try the sandwiches, which are huge.
Set in a cramped medieval building close to the market and the famous Shambles, Pivni is an award-winning real ale pub. There’s no cellar, so there’s regular rotation of stock, much like a regular medieval inn, in fact. If the building is the initial attraction, it’s the quality of the beers that keep people coming back. Downstairs gets crowded quickly, but there’s more room upstairs. In addition to cask ales, Pivni has more than sixty cold bottled beers, ample for any taste. Food is served, but it comes from a nearby deli. For good beer in perfect surroundings, Pivni can’t be beaten.
A true gem of a pub that has stood the test of time, The Cross Keys Inn epitomizes the laid back ethos of the people in this village. The pub was built in 1763, and it seems that nothing much has changed since then. The wood burning in the old fireplace, the wooden tables and chairs scattered across the room as well as on its patio, the wooden beam supporting the burly structure, all exude a rustic, historic charm. A number of locals, dog walkers and mountain bikers stop by any time of the day and gleefully gulp down a few bottles of beer, which are sourced from the J.W. Lees Brewery in Middleton. The home-cooked local delicacies like lasagna, fish and chips complement the beers. And that's not just what this pub is all about. The pub hosts exciting folk music sessions of its folk club every Wednesday evening, inviting a number of local and international musicians.
