"An Ancient Gateway"

The Porte de Paris, part of the fortifications until the 19th century, also served as an ancient gateway for the sick as it led to the leper-house. It was built in 1682 by the architect Simon Vollant to celebrate Lille's return to France and Louis the 14th's triumphant entry into Lille in August 1667. It forms a semi-circular arch decorated with the royal arms and the arms of Lille surmounted by an imposing sculpted design of Victory crowning Louis the 14th. On either side, two Doric columns flank Mars and Hercules, symbolizing the king's warrior genius and his strength.
