"Peace South of the River"
In 1994 the Bonnington Square Garden Association was set up by local residents to develop a piece of land which had been abandoned due to bombing in the Second World War. Fortunately, this association included two professional gardeners. It is now a lovely, peaceful garden which is always open and lit with fairy lights in the evenings. It includes a 100-foot wheel which was previously used to cut marble in a local factory. The atmosphere is something like that of a secret garden in the middle of the city hubbub. There is also a café, and a shop selling organic food.
