"Unusual Memorial Monument"
Located at the end of Tooley Street just at the start of London Bridge, is the Southwark Needle. This is a 16 meters (52 feet) long, titled-pillar made of limestone. This spiked-memorial marks the spot where traitors heads were impaled for more than 400 years, since the early 1300s. Guy Fawkes, Thomas Cromwell, Wat Tyler and William 'Braveheart" Wallace were among the many people whose treachery was disclosed to the public by displaying their heads here. This gruesome reminder is an often over-looked sight, amidst the hustle and bustle around the bridge.
