Elbe-Lübeck Canal

Since medieval times, an artificial waterway known as the Stecknitz Canal had connected Lübeck with the river Elbe, and thus indirectly with the North Sea. By the late 19th Century, however, the old canal was nothing but a relic from long-gone days, and was far too narrow, shallow and meandering for any modern steamboat. Consequently, it was replaced with the Elbe-Lübeck Canal between 1896 and 1900. For many decades, it was one of the most important waterways in North Germany. Its economic significance has somewhat diminished now, but that does not affect its attractiveness. The canal is lined by well-maintained promenades, often on both banks, which lead through surprisingly diverse and beautiful landscapes. A good starting point for walks is the very beginning of the canal, at the historic lift bridge which is located at the northern tip of the Old Town.
