"A Vault of History & Beer"

Some houses are much more than mere structures. To those who can read them, they are like history books made of stone and wood. Such is the case with Alfstraße No. 36. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the first structure in this very location was a wooden house built in 1184 - the oldest known building in Lübeck, destroyed by fire in 1209. The cellar of the subsequent building from 1225 still exists today, as the oldest basement vault in the entire city. The 13th-century house itself had to make room for a new building in the early 20th Century. It survived to the present day, and the grey Jugendstil facade still shows in large brass letters the name of the hardware wholesale company that had its residence here from 1919 to 1983. Today, the house is home to the Brauberger brewery and inn, and patrons can enjoy their beer in the 13th-century cellar, surrounded by solid traces of history. -Oliver Henkel
