This book village was introduced in the year 2017, with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of India and credits its inspiration to the Welsh “Hay-on-Wye” book town in England. Recognized as the “First Book Village in India", they have an official logo, an illustration of a strawberry resting on an open book, which also represents the farm grown strawberries of Bhilar. With 25 centers across the village, the libraries are accessible free of cost from a selection of 18 distinct genres, in the languages of Marathi, Hindi, English and Gujarati. Beautiful wall murals in vibrant colors, painted by professional artists, adorn the libraries on the outside and makes for Instagram worthy pictures. An open amphitheater in the village, hosts several events dedicated to writers and annual celebrations felicitating teachers, from the state. The administration has created a strong digital presence by sharing photographs and updates on events held here. This initiative is creating a strong influence in the village, especially on young minds to inculcate the habit of reading from an early age.
