"Military History"

The Fort Constitution State Historic Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Originally at this site was located the colonial era fortification built to protect naval interests of Portsmouth's growing trade and ship building industries, the Fort William and Mary. Over several key periods of unrest and war, significant changes were made to the fort to improve its defenses especially during the American Revolution and the Civil War. It wasn't until 1791 that the fort was renamed Fort Constitution and handed over to the United States by the State of New Hampshire. Between 1897 and 1903, new fortifications were built and these were very essential to the defense of the country during the Spanish American War, World War I and II. Returned to the State in 1961, its ruins are now a state park. Please visit the website prior to visiting as the park is occasionally closed by the Coast Guard for security measure.
