The fascinating Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum is dedicated to both the history of fire fighting in the region and the local fire service. There is a wide variety of exhibits and interesting displays, the main focus being original fire appliances. Get transported to different period settings such as a Victorian street or a World War II Blitz scene, where you can wander around and absorb the atmosphere. Admission is free, although it should be noted that the museum is usually only open to the public by prior arrangement. Please call if you require further details.
Who says that you can't change what's been set in stone? Shambles Square has been physically moved two times to its current location near the Manchester Cathedral. The buildings were moved the first time to make room for the Arndale Shopping Center and again in 1999 due to a government-sponsored redevelopment, years after the 1996 IRA bombings where the square maintained minimal damage. Although it is quaint, it is a little piece of survived history that transports you to yesteryear.
