Hike Maui

If you cannot manage to move to the island, arrange a tour through this company. With more than 15 years of experience providing adventure/eco-tours, these people are expert guides. They can take you into the heart of the rain forest, under waterfalls, to the summit of Haleakala and down into the crater. Prices are reasonable for a half-day hike. Call or check the website for more information.

Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Farm and Distillery

Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery is an eco-friendly distillery that produces premium quality vodka. The sugarcane comes from its onsite farm which blends with mineral water from the deep sea to create this popular brand. It is touted to be the only vodka that is made from organic sugarcane. The drink is gluten-free and as close to nature as possible. Tour the facility and relax in the martini garden where you can sip a few strong cocktails amidst strawberries, pineapple and local flora.

Kula Botanical Gardens

Upcountry is a different world, and this garden area is as up as you can get without traveling to Haleakala. In the serene botanical gardens, a wide variety of plants and animals flourish. Relax by a trickling stream or examine the strangely beautiful blossoms known as protea. While most of the garden is handicapped-accessible, the pond in the ravine is not. The works of local artisans and craftsmen are displayed at the gift shop. Children under 6 can enjoy free admission.

Pacific Whale Foundation

Since 1980, nearly two million people have joined experts on the Eco-Adventure cruises. High-tech catamarans powered with biodiesel fuel take you dolphin and whale watching in Maui. The Pacific Whale Organization aims to scientifically identify adverse factors affecting the recovery of endangered marine mammals and works to eradicate those factors. Educational programs involving whales, dolphins, porpoises, and other marine mammals are regularly organized. The organization also maintains speakers' bureau and a library on marine mammals and their habitat. The most popular programs offered by the Pacific Whale Foundation are the Sunset Cocktail and Dinner Cruise.

Waihe‘e Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge

The Waihe‘e Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge is a 277-acre natural site on Maui's north shore. This area was once home to two native Hawaiian villages, heiau's and an inland fishpond, making it a very important cultural site on the island. The refuge is currently home to eight different endangered species, including Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles.

Kepaniwai Park and Heritage Gardens

Established in 1952, this park is dedicated to preserving Maui's ethnic heritage, including Hawaiian, Portuguese, Japanese, Caucasian and Filipino cultures. As you stroll the lush tropical gardens, you'll see several thatched-roof Hawaiian huts, a Portuguese villa, a New England "saltbox" and a Japanese garden with a stone pagoda. This is a wonderful location for a family picnic or a "getting-to-know-you" date. It's located just next to the Nature Center in Iao Valley.
