"British Towers"

Martello Towers are 40 feet tall round defensive structures built in countries who were under the British rule during the nineteenth century. These towers were built by the British army, and served as military base and protective walls for the country from possible enemy threats. One such structure in Mauritius can be found in the village of Tamarin. This tower along the Le Preneuse beach is one of only three such standing structures, the others being the ones at Grand River North West and Port Louis. The historic tower today is open to the public, and over the years has gone on to become an integral part of the rich Mauritian history.
