Hilltop Gardens

If you like aloe vera, then Hilltop Gardens is the place to visit in order to find out more about this versatile and healing succulent. The farm is one of the first commercially viable centers for cultivating aloe in the U.S. and it offers guided tours (booked in advance) for groups of ten or more. The site includes a sensory walk, healing garden and if you wish to stay at the garden, the three-bedroom inn is available for rental as well, which houses up to eight guests.

Nuevo Santander Gallery

Nuevo Santander Gallery is named after the 18th-century colony of Southern Texas and Northern Mexico. Located in the heart of Arts District, this building boasts a Spanish-colonial architectural style. Over a century-old doors, iron frames and stained glass-work add character and charm to this gallery. On display are Che and Becky Guerra's collection of artwork and antiques curated from across the world. Browse through Old West guns and saddles; Mexican currency, medals and sombreros; Colonial paintings and sculptures; and authentic collectibles from Europe. They also host rotating exhibitions by local and international artists.

Sacred Heart Church

Founded in 1911 and built by the U.S. Army soldiers from New York in 1913, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church sits prettily in downtown McAllen. Still an active parish, this yellow brick structure attracts a number of locals as well as tourists. The mammoth spire bearing a cross at a height of 60 feet (18 meters) is one of its prominent architectural features.

Arts District

The Arts District in McAllen is the creative pulse of the city. It is home to Archer Park, the Public Library, and myriad galleries and restaurants. Explore the tropical gardens of this former mansion and admire plants and birds as well as its Spanish Revival style architecture. Join throngs of bird watchers and catch a glimpse of house sparrows and hummingbirds, among over 500 species. Take a walk through the pavilion and photograph rare butterflies in their fascinating glory. They also rents out the venue for various events such as corporate functions and private parties.
