Within the building pertaining to the rectorate of the Universidad de Los Andes, next to Plaza Bolívar, the Archaeological Museum occupies the rooms that surround a small side-garden. Belonging to the university and founded in 1986, this museum functions as a research unit and a scientific-cultural diffusion centre, dedicated to the archaeology of the Andes, and especially of Mérida. The facilities host permanent exhibitions, seminaries and workshops, and offer a library and publications service. Its collection includes stone and ceramic pieces that date from between 25,000 and 5,000 B.C.
