by artyangel

"The oldest church in the city"

Generally considered to be an historical and colonial treasure, the Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen) church, is the oldest religious construction in the city of Mérida. Appropriately, the church is near the Plaza Bolívar, and helps enhance the outstanding group of buildings that are found in this area. It also hosts the Pantheon of Mérida, so if you do visit this fine example of colonial architecture, the church but awaits you. The building is also a seat of the Carmelite Brotherhood, established in 1853.
