"To the Great Humanist"
An experience hard to find in many other cities, but one that you can enjoy in the inter-connected avenues of Andrés Bello and Urdaneta in Mérida, is to stroll not along the sidewalk, but rather through the verdant landscape of the adjacent parks. Especially pleasant to walk through is the one named after Caracas' illustrious native son Don Andrés Bello, an important historical figure not only in the civic and cultural history of Venezuela, but also Chile and the rest of Hispanic America. A statue of this great man, who was also Simón Bolívar's mentor, sits on top of a small rise in the land, gazing out over the 10,000 square-metres of parkland, which includes ample green areas, water mirrors, comfortable pathways and a fountain with high water jets.
