Orto Botanico di Brera

Located right behind the Brera Art Gallery, in the Brera Place complex, Orto Botanico di Brera dates back to the late 18th Century. An Italian monk and botanist, Fulgezio Vitman, worked for the establishment of this botanical garden in 1774. It was created with the aim of providing an educational platform for students of botany and pharmacy. Giuseppe Piermarini, of the Scala Theatre fame, assisted Vitman in designing the garden. Orto Botanico di Brera, today, is home to a vast collection of medicinal plants, ornamental plants and vegetables. A restored greenhouse, located at the northern end, is used as a teaching center by the Academy of Fine Arts.

Bocconi University

The building of the private Luigi Bocconi university was designed between 1937-41 by architect Giuseppe Pagano with Gian Giacomo Predeval. Inspired by the plan for the Bauhaus school by Walter Gropius, it is one of the buildings in Milan most influenced by European rationalism. The complex, to which many additions were made after WW2, occupies the entire block between via Sarfatti and via Toniolo. It is in the shape of a cross: the arms are used for services and connections, while the ends provide office space and classrooms. The open arrangement of the various sections, the connections between the volumes and the white surfaces marked at regular intervals by square windows lined with lythoceramic tiles divide up the rooms of the university through rational architecture conceived by Pagano as "service" and as an answer to concrete needs.

Torba Monastery

At the foot of the archaeological site of Castelseprio, Torba Monastery is an architectural chronicle of the steady passage of time. The monastery was originally built by the Romans in the 5th Century as a military stronghold against the Barbarians. A single tower and wall from this period still stand as a testament to the Romans knack for ingenious architectural forms. In later years, the complex was variously used by the Goths and Lombards for defensive purposes, each adding to the existing Roman structure. In the 8th Century, the fortress was handed over to a group of Benedictine nuns. They expanded the complex, adding a monastery and church, decorating the walls with simple frescoes. The monastery thrived for centuries until it was finally abandoned in 1436 and subsequently used as a farm. Despite its varied use across the ages, markers from each time period have survived, creating a visual representation of a long and eventful history. Of particular interest is a painting of three faceless nuns, ghostly forms cloaked in an aura of mystery that invite much speculation. The medieval monastery was included in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Site in 2011.
