Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Construction of the "Galleria", a typically 19th-century public building that is now one of the oldest shopping malls in the city, began in 1865 following a series of competitions for the design won by Giuseppe Mengoni. Large plaster eagles support its dome, 47-meter high and made of iron and glass. Note the designs on the interiors and the Neo-Renaissance-style stucco work and graffiti. The floor of the building was completely restored in 1966 in a rare mosaic showing the emblems of Italian cities.

Suri Mono

This shop has been so successful it has recently had to move to a larger site. The fascination of the Far East attracts the Milanese and tourists who wish to buy a gift, furnish their house or give their wardrobe something extra. Here you will find Indian, Afghan and African jewellery, soft but very expensive pashminas, and a variety of original objects including handwritten Japanese and Chinese symbols (not printed!), lacquer trays, handpainted bowls and chopsticks. The clothes are very chic: Chinese and Indian silks, and shantung and velvets for jackets and suits that are very popular with the well-heeled of Milan. Gera and tatami-zori are Japanese slippers, while the evening bags decorated with small pieces of mirror are great fun. If you don't want to spend much, there are fortune bracelets, teapots and Indonesian baskets in all sizes. A real treat are the Nepalese wrapping papers and elegant writing books.
