Baxter State Park is a naturally preserved park in Piscataquis County. Covering approximately 209,501 acres (84,782 hectares) of lush green area, the state park is where the highest peak in the state of Maine is situated, namely Mount Katahdin. Home to several species of wild animals and birds, like white-tailed deer, beavers, otters, muskrats, moose, hawks, eagles and many others, Baxter State Park is blessed with a diverse range of flora and fauna. Named after Governor Percival Baxter who bought the park and donated it to the State of Maine, Baxter State Park now offers many activities such as hiking, camping, and much more.
