The Legacy Museum

Opened in April 2018, The Legacy Museum is an African-American history museum that covers broad themes from slavery to present-day police violence. Housed in a building which was once home to slaves, the museum now hosts hundreds of exhibits dedicated to the domestic slave trade practiced in the country. Visitors to the museum can browse through historical artifacts and sculptures and see videos and interactive media related to the slave trade. Other exhibits on contemporary issues like unfair punishments to convicts and mass incarceration can also be viewed here. If you want to learn more about the historically important and even various socially relevant issues plaguing the country today, then a visit to The Legacy Museum will certainly prove to be both informative and fascinating.

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice

A true symbol of respect to victims of mob and racial violence, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice is a moving memorial dedicated to them. The establishment includes some moving artwork depicting slavery and other such practices. An integral part of the country's history, the memorial serves as a reminder to the injustices of the past.

Rosa Parks Museum and Library

Rosa Parks is a very popular name as far as the African-American revolutionary movement is concerned; thus it's no surprise that the Troy University has established a Rosa Parks Library & Museum. The museum is an eye opener as it educates you in detail about the Montgomery Bus Boycott that Rosa Parks started. There are exhibitions, cultural events and various other programs that help you learn more about this revolutionary movement. The museum also has various other activities for children as well as adults to make your visit to this place all the more entertaining.

Civil Rights Memorial

Housed in the political center of downtown Montgomery, the Civil Rights Memorial is an august reminder of the iconic, long-drawn struggle that the country witnessed in the 1950s and 1960s. Upholding the values of equality, liberty, and integrity, the memorial was designed in order to pay tribute to the 40 individuals who lost their lives during the Civil Rights Movement. Designed by the eminent Maya Ying Lin, the memorial tells stirring stories of the fighters of the political movement through carved timelines, names and quotes. A site steeped in history, it also houses an immersive library and museum. The Wall of Tolerance is an interesting concept that displays the names of pledged visitors who have 'taken a stand against hate', and work to propagate justice and tolerance. Every story displayed and every exhibit presented is indeed quite touching and inspirational.

The Dexter Parsonage Museum

The Dexter Parsonage Museum is a historical home where ministers from the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church lived. The other reason for the museum's popularity is that the great Dr. Martin Luther King and his family resided here between 1954 and 1960 during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Garden of Reflection situated at the back of the museum is a tranquil spot with magnolia trees, white azaleas, crape myrtles and a pathway that goes around it. To know more about the Dexter Parsonage Museum, a visit to their website is recommended.

Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts

Housed inside the beautiful Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is dedicated to preserving fine artwork by some of the revolutionary painters of the past. Apart from this, the museum also hosts some unique collectibles like works on paper and old prints that date back to the 15th century and dainty porcelain pieces. You can choose to book a free tour of the museum or explore the place with an audio tour. Check website for more information.
