Overlooking the beautiful settlement of Montreux, the Dent de Jaman is an interesting climb. It can be accessed from the Col de Jaman and the various well-marked trails leading to the summit are absolutely stunning, with herds of sheep, lush Alpine trees and serene mountain lakes making an entry along the way. However, this mountain also poses various risks in the form of loose rocks, marshy terrain and steep ridges. Mostly popular with experienced climbers, it is advised that proper caution is taken before ascending this enchanting yet challenging mountain.
In a wonderful old building one can learn about the history and lifestyle of the old Montreux. Once functioning as a vineyard house, the museum holds historic artifacts, art works and sculptures from as far back as the 17th Century.
The Rochers de Naye is a mountain at a height of 2,042 meters above the city of Montreux. A haven for thrill-seekers and adventure lovers, the mountain offers a difficult via ferrata (trail equipped with ladders and bridges) from the Col de Jaman to the Rochers de Naye. You can also avail of the cogwheel train journey through the pastureland of the terrain that offers a breathtaking view of the Alpine mountain range, the Lake of Geneva and the Swiss plains. Once you reach the top of the mountain, the Rochers de Naye offers recreational, entertainment and dining facilities. The La Rambertia is an Alpine garden and the Marmot's Paradise, where you can learn all there is about the species of Marmot, are few of the must-visit attractions.
Erected in honour of one of rock and roll's most iconic frontmen, the legendary Freddy Mercury's gleaming bronze statue strikes his unforgettable triumphal pose along Les Planches' charming eastern waterfront. Freddy's association with Switzerland started when he became transfixed by the quaint alpine town of Montreux after recording an album there in 1978 with his band Queen. Affirming his love for the calm and quiet of his surroundings, the rocker also purchased a stately mansion that overlooked the tranquil waters of Lake Geneva. The city administration decided to repay his faith towards his adopted home after his demise by building him a 3-meter ( 9.8-feet) memorial statue in his memory that still shines as brightly today as it did in 1996.
Located on the shoreline of Lake Geneva is the famous Montreux Casino known to host the Montreux Jazz Festival. The casino was rebuilt in 1971 after it was burned down when a fan set the venue ablaze during a Frank Zappa concert, the incident is memorialized in English rock group, Deep Purple's song, "Smoke on the water". The casino has been a popular venue for many great symphony orchestras and renowned conductors. Today the casino serves as an event venue and is home to one of the best contemporary restaurant and bar in Montreux.
The Château de Chillon (Chillon Castle) is the most visited historical building in the country. Located 20 minutes away by train (just outside Montreux), this fortress dates back to the 11th century and is worth a visit. Try to avoid the massive number of tourists who flock here during the summer months by arriving early. And if you are able to, take the train to Montreux and walk along the lake to the castle. One piece of advice, a tourist stall screens a video of the castle right outside the entrance. Try not to be one of those people who become glued to the screen when the real thing is towering above your head!
