Monument to Minin and Pozharsky
"Traces of Russian Bravery"
The Monument to Minin and Pozharsky is dedicated to a Russian prince and a merchant who led the Russian army to overthrow the Polish-Lithuanian forces. Constructed in 1816 and designed by Russian sculptor Ivan Martos, the bronze statues of Prince Dmitry Pozharsky and local merchant Kuzma Minin are placed on a red granite base. While the Prince led the army, the battle was funded by Minin and his guild of merchants. The plaque on the base of the monument depicts Russian citizens sacrificing their wealth. Made to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the war, the monument depicts Pozharsky sitting while Minin is standing and pointing towards the Moscow Kremlin. The statue was originally erected in the famous Red Square. However, it was moved near St.Basil's Cathedral. A historical reminder of Russian History, the statue is a remarkable national monument.
