Leichhardt River

by Lobster1

"Mysterious Fossils"

The Leichhardt River takes its name from Friedrich Leichhardt, a Prussian naturalist who is famous for exploring much of north and central Australia during the nineteenth century. Ancient fossils found around the area have helped uncover its natural history. One of the most exciting discoveries occurred in 2011 when prehistoric marsupial bones, still unidentified, were discovered along the river course. Also significant is nearby Lake Moondarra, which was formed by damming the Leichhardt River. With a watershed of 32,878 square kilometers (12,694 square miles), the rivershed is a primary location for occupations like mining and grazing.
