"Historic Castle Ruins"
Standing guard over Moura's Old Town, the Castelo de Moura is steeped in history. Originally believed to be the site of an Iron Age settlement, the strategic location was occupied by the Moors and later developed as a key military post by King Dom Dinis in the 13th Century after the Christian Reconquest. In the 16th Century, the castle was again renovated under master architect Francisco de Arruda under Dom Manuel I's orders. Among the points of interests, the legend-wreathed Salúquia Tower and keep with its pyramidal battlements have survived devastation by invading forces and the earthquake of 1755 that leveled much of the city. From the terrace, reached via a spiral staircase, the entire town of Moura and Ardila River are visible in a breathtaking sweep.
