Eclectic is the first word that comes to mind when you walk into Nantucket Bookworks. It offers a varied selection of reading material from all genres in an environment that is quite conducive to browsing. The store is cozy without being cramped, allowing the reader plenty of room to search for the perfect story. It also features many unique gifts, a large selection of cards and stationery, and children's toys.
While it does offer the latest bestsellers, an excellent selection of children's books and a rich backlog of classic books, what really sets Mitchell's Book Corner apart is the Nantucket Room. You will find practically every book ever written on or about Nantucket here, including histories, mysteries, photography, calendars and even cookbooks. Their Nantucket collection also has a rich selection of books on whaling, boating and marine history.
There is something special about an independent bookstore. The owners have a knowledge and love of books. This shop is set in historic Edgartown and has a unique atmosphere with a welcoming staff. They have a wide selection of titles including the latest best sellers, but their specialty is the large collection of Vineyard-related books. The shop puts an emphasis on community, and you will find many books written by islanders. Many noted authors stop by to say hello and have been known to sign a copy or two of their books.
A time-honored tradition on the island is a trip to Murdick's candy store. The shop has been selling high-quality fudge and brittle since 1887. To this day, the old fashioned fudge is cooked strictly in copper pots and cooled on a marble table. Try one of the many flavored fudge creations such as Cape Cod Cranberry, Chocolate Walnut or Butter Pecan; the list is extensive. If you cannot decide, this candy shop offers a combination package with three slices of fudge and Cashew Brittle. There are additional candy shops in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.

First of all, yes, there really is an Aunt Leah, and she is the one that makes the fudge. Aunt Leah has over 30 flavors of fudge for you to taste, and it would be a shame to disappoint her. The flavors are something to behold, from Peanut Butter to Chocolate Macadamia Nut to Cranberry Chocolate Nut Supreme. This establishment is available for weddings and parties, or just for weary tourists who follow the delicious smells to her store.
Young's Bicycle Shop, located at Steamboat Wharf, is a Nantucket institution. Harvey Young now sells, services and rents bicycles to residents and tourists just as his grandfather did when he started the business in 1931. A variety of bikes suitable for exploring the Island's bike paths or dirt roads are available. Most bikes rent for around $25 per day, although tandem bikes and full-suspension mountain bikes rent for slightly more. Weekly rates are also available.
Located bang opposite the Whaling Museum, The Sunken Ship offers a range of t-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, hats, ties and sporting goods like fishing poles, surfboards, baseballs, skate-boards, scuba-diving gears, etc. You can also find a huge stock of Nantucket souvenirs and stickers. The general store houses everything under the sun, and it goes by the saying "If you don't see something, just ask...we probably have it!"
