John Muir National Historic Site

This national park is the preserved home of one of the United States' most famous naturalists and conservationists, John Muir. Muir, who passed away in 1914, founded the Sierra Club and is considered the father of the National Parks system. The site consists of Muir's 17-room Victorian mansion and surrounding fruit ranch, his gravesite, the Martinez Adobe, and the recently added Mount Wanda area that features the John Muir Nature Trail. Take the self-guided tour of the grounds. There are special events around Christmas and on John Muir's birthday, April 21.

Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park

This restored grist mill, originally built in 1846, is still functional and visitors can see its massive millstones in action, where millers grind flour out of local wheat. Guided tours of the mill are highly recommended, and flour produced here can also be purchased as a souvenir. The verdant surroundings are a great addition to the historic charm of this site, with winding trails adding to the outdoorsy appeal of this park.

Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park

Centered around the historic Rancho Petaluma Adobe, the Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park is imbued with historical nuances while also offering visitors the chance to admire the beauty of its surroundings. Step back in time and gain a deeper insight into the lifestyle which prevailed here in the past. Visitors can peruse numerous exhibits and objects showcased at the ranch house and can also choose from several picnic spots scattered across the park's scenic expanse to bask in its picturesque surrounds.

Sonoma State Historic Park

The Sonoma State Historic Park, home of Mission San Francisco Solano, is an interesting stop during any visit to Sonoma. In addition to the mission, it features the Blue Wing Inn, Sonoma Barracks, the Toscano Hotel, the Servants Quarters, and Vallejo's Home, each steeped in local history and culture. Explore the grounds, visit the museum and gain a deeper insight into the place of origin of the symbolic Bear Flag of the state through informative exhibitions.

Jack London State Historic Park

The Jack London State Historic Park is a beautiful site that covers about 47.5 acres (19 hectares) of land area. Many of Jack London's works were penned during his time at the cottage located here, and the author's legacy and life have been preserved in the form of riveting exhibits and displays at the House of Happy Walls Museum. Visitors can also embark on explorations of the surrounding parkland through picturesque trails or unwind at scenic picnic sites while basking in the beauty of the environs. The park also includes Jack London's burial site and the ruins of a structure that was intended to serve as the writer's house.

Benicia Capitol State Historic Park

Featuring a building which served as the State Capitol from 1853 to 1854, the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park makes for a fascinating visit. The interiors as well as the exterior portion of the landmark have been restored and is open to the general public for viewing. Visitors can explore the furniture, furnishings and fixtures that were used in the bygone era. Guided tours or group visits can also be arranged with prior reservations.
