Church of Santa Maria Maggiore della Pietrasanta

Santa Maria Maggiore Della Pietrasanta is historically the oldest church in Naples, dedicated to Virgin Mary. The church itself is magnificent, but the ravages of time have taken its toll on the structure. The church was rebuilt in the 17th Century based on the designs of Cosimo Fanzago and then rebuilt again in the 18th Century with a terracotta floor and majolica tiles. Restoration is still in progress and hence the facade looks a bit truncated and inconsistent with the main body of the building. Right next to the facade stands the chapel of Salvatore which fascinates many with its medieval bell tower and polychrome marble altar built from the remains of the original church.
