Parco archeologico di Paestum

"UNESCO Heritage Site"

Today three Doric temples dedicated to the Greek-Roman gods of Hera, Ceres and Poseidon command the townscape of the former coastal town. It was probably founded in the 7th century by the Greeks and named 'Poseidonia' after the god of the sea. The Romans conquered the town in AD 273 and gave the town a Roman look by building an amphitheatre and a forum. The museum at the north entrance to the grounds displays some interesting finds that came to light during excavations.
