Vivara Island

by Porfirio

"Smallest Island in the Gulf of Naples"

The island of Vivara covers just 3.8 square kilometers (1.5 square miles) and contains a coastal path three kilometers (about two miles) long. It's connected to Procida thanks to a 300-meter (980-foot) bridge. A State Natural Reserve of inestimable value, Vivara is completely uninhabited, but there are a myriad of flowers and varieties of plants now rare that grow here, and the colors and scents change with the seasons. The surrounding waters are a protected marine area of the Kingdom of Neptune. The current access to the island was built to accommodate the wife of King Umberto I of Savoy, Princess Maria Jose, who wanted to visit this fascinating island despite its difficult access. Today the bridge is accessible from the Chiaiolella area of Procida. It can only be visited by making advance reservations.
